District Explorer Scout Commissioner

Scouting is all about having fun, making friends, learning new skills and the adventure of trying exciting outdoor activities!

We’re looking for a highly motivated person to lead the Explorer Scout section across Lambeth Scout District.

Explorer Scouts are young people aged 14 to 18 and are encouraged to lead themselves in deciding the programme and direction of their Explorer Scout Unit, with support and guidance from leaders. The section also includes the Young Leaders’ Scheme, where young people are able to take on a leadership role in one of the younger sections.

There is wider scope for activities like offshore sailing, campaigning, performing, parascending, mountaineering and expeditions.

What's involved?

The District Explorer Scout Commissioner is a key role which has responsibility for ensuring that leaders working with our 14-17 members are supported and managed, and that a quality programme is being delivered to the young people in the section throughout the District. The role is interesting, challenging, exciting and rewarding all at once!

The District Explorer Scout Commissioner is a member of the District Team and is responsible for:

  • managing, developing and supporting Explorer Scouting across the District

  • assisting Explorer Scout Leaders and assistants to complete their leader training commitments

  • supporting the District Explorer Scout Team in providing an annual programme of District events and activities

  • ensuring that Explorer Scout Leaders provide a balanced programme to their Unit members

  • working with the District Executive Committee to ensure that Explorer Scout Units are adequately and appropriately funded

  • maintaining the District Explorer Scout Forum to ensure that Explorer Scouts views feed directly into the management of Explorer Scouting in the District

  • encouraging Explorer Scout Leaders to maintain a good relationship with Group Scout Leaders and Scout Leaders to enable the smooth transition of Scouts to Explorer Scouts

  • working In partnership with the District Explorer Scout Leader responsible for Young Leaders to ensure that the District Young Leaders’ Unit provides all Young Leaders in the District with adequate training and are given full access to the wider District Explorer Scout programme

  • regularly review the provision of Explorer Scouting in the District.

You don't need to know anything about scouting to get involved - but you do need enthusiasm and a willingness to get involved help provide great programmes to the young people in the section.

Flexible volunteering
The only prerequisite to volunteer with us – apart from enthusiasm, of course – is that you're over 18. We know our volunteers lead busy lives, so we’re all about flexibility: whatever the time and skills available we can find a great role for you.

You can choose to volunteer with us once a week, twice a month or once a year – in the thick of activities with young people or behind the scenes in management, executive or support roles.

Time commitment:

The time commitment is flexible although there is an expectation that you will be able to attend meetings of the District Executive Committee and District Team and keep in contact with the adults in each Explorer Scout Unit as necessary.
